Between the World and Me
Year: 2016
Medium: Dance performance
Duration: 20 mins
Description:
Between the World and Me is a reflection on living in a pre-dominantly white Central European society as a woman of Afro-Caribbean origin, the awkward encounters and complex questions of identity. The movement language is derived from research using AI software, experimenting with notions of the uncanny, humanly impossible poses, which unexpectedly gave voice to the effects of micro-aggressions. Adopting its title and starting point from the award-winning bestseller of African American writer, Ta-Nehisi Coates, the piece explores the dehumanising violence of stereotypes.
The piece was premiered in September 2016 at the L1 Festival, MU Theatre, Budapest, Hungary.
